It's almost been a year since the varroa destructor mite was discovered near the Port of Newcastle in New South Wales.
It's prevalent across the globe and highly destructive to bee populations, but had never made it to Australia until last year.
While there are now more than 150 infection sites in New South Wales, authorities are insisting it can be eradicated.
University of Colorado professor professor Samuel Ramsey has just completed a PHD on varroa mite and the results could determine if eradication in Australia is possible.
