A brood box is simply a deep super, with an entrance cut in the front. Most beekeepers use a standard super with risers, which serves the same function, but allows you to use it as a honey super later on

Treat with Copper Naphthenate

Pine timber will rot, if not treated. Painting will help, however the microbes can gain entry even from cuts and nicks from your hive tool. The solution is to treat the pine with Copper Naphthenate.
